Thunder camp has stressed getting out fast and pushing the ball ahead with unselfish play.
โit comes back to, you know, pretty much our principles and what we've been working on in training camp is, you know, getting out fast and making outlets, getting the ball up ahead. And I think we all play unselfish. We all want to see a person win and succeed.โ
Training camp is teaching McCain the base principles behind plays he only learned the endings of last season.
โI learned a lot of the offense of like the endings of plays or new plays that we added in towards the end of the season last year and I never even knew like where the base play came from. And so being in training camp has just allowed me to help learn the base principles of what they teach here at the Thunder, offensively and defensively.โ
Shai beats defenders in many ways and stays unselfish until it is time to take over.
โwhat makes him so special is being able to just beat you in so many different ways whether it off the dribble in the mid three to the rim. I think that makes it so hard to guard and he does a great job of being unselfish out there and when it's time to take over, we know he can.โ
McCain says others bringing the ball up saves Shai's energy and gets him to his spots quicker in the half court.
โfor him, he's always guarded by the best player, and so when he has to take the ball up, he's getting tired. He's playing a lot of minutes, so having someone to relieve that pressure off of him, bringing the ball up, it allows him to use that quickness and use the stamina he has to make the move stronger, whatever it is, and get to our spots and get to our play quicker for him in the half court.โ
Mara has shown a commitment to consistent unseen work over a short span.
โhis commitment level, you know, like I said, in the invisible spaces is a really encouraging sign. Because that's how you improve is your ability to put consistent work in. And he's proven in at least a short span of time that he's capable of that.โ
